Artery Gallery is curated and managed by the student Society of Fine Artists (SOFA) at the University of Waterloo. As a visual arts collective we support vital contemporary art practices. We hope to fulfill a responsibility to the artistic community by providing a venue for outstanding emerging art as well as an undefinable creative space; testing the boundary between the artist and the community.
The Artery’s mandate is to provide a space for exhibitions and creative projects, along with technical support and promotional assistance. SOFA encourages innovation among artists of diverse media and approaches. Additionally we endeavour to be involved with and support local festivals and events. In the past we have participated in the Ontario Arts Council's spOtlight Festival, Hype on King Block Party and the Open Ears Festival.
The gallery is run on the basis of volunteer work and is supported and financed by SOFA fundraising initiatives, the City of Kitchener, The University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts, and the Department of Fine Arts.
The Artery Gallery is currently located on 263 Phillip St. The gallery was previously located on 158 King St., and was donated to the University of Waterloo's Fine Arts Department by the City of Kitchener. Artery Gallery was constructed during the summer of 2004, and had its grand opening in October that same year. The collaborative exhibition called 'Antecedents' featured works by the University of Waterloo Fine Arts Alumni. In addition to the City of Kitchener, the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts and SOFA, the Artery is indebted to Professor Art Green who was dedicated to this student-run space since its inception.
As an Arts Society, the Society of Fine Artists strives to unite the students of the Fine Arts Faculty with their community. Through various fundraisers, events, artist talks, community collaborations and exhibitions, we endeavor to provide our volunteers with the flexibility to create and manage valuable student programs. Beginning in September our executive meets twice a month to coordinate and organize our yearly events. If you are a Fine Arts student at the University of Waterloo and are interested in getting involved in SOFA please contact us via email at email@example.com. Anyone can volunteer at the Artery, if you are interested in volunteering for the gallery there are various opportunities available including installations, lighting, striking or gallery sitting.
